Often referred to as the queen of silk, it is indeed a type of silk, but have you ever wondered where silk comes from? It's used to make clothing. Silk is actually a type of fabric made from natural protein. The most popular type of silk is produced by the cocoons of mulberry silkworm larvae. The cultivation of silkworms is commonly known as sericulture. To produce good silk, healthy silkworms are needed, along with a nutritious diet, namely mulberry leaves. This plant, native to China, is widespread in almost all regions, both tropical and subtropical. The silkworm cultivation process initially involves placing silkworm larvae in containers filled with mulberry leaves as food. When the silkworms turn yellowish and become denser, this is a sign that the silkworms will begin to wrap themselves in cocoons, which become the raw material for silk fabric. Before further processing, the silkworm cocoons must first be sorted to separate the good ones from the poor ones. The sorting process includes cleaning and stripping the outer fibers of the cocoons, separating large cocoons from small ones, separating good cocoons from defective and dirty ones. After sorting, the cocoons must first be boiled in hot water at approximately 95 degrees Celsius for one to two minutes to kill the silkworm larvae inside. This process also aims to make the ends of the silk filament fibers easier to find and unravel into long silk threads. Initially, this material is spun into thread. In modern times, most silk fabric production processes are machine-made, speeding up the process and saving energy. To enhance the appearance of the resulting fabric, plain silk can be further processed using dyeing, printing, and finishing methods. At this stage, the plain fabric can be colored using roller printing or screen printing. Once formed into a sheet of fabric, this material can be made into various clothing and other products. Some of the finest batik in Indonesia even uses silk. ⚠️Some of the footage on this channel is not ours. Copyright rests entirely with the respective owners of the footage.
