Volunteer Stories from Home: Sharon Kane

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the National Museum of the United States Army to temporarily close its doors, the Museum's volunteers were left anxiously waiting to share the Museum’s hidden stories and why they chose to be part of this historic project. "Volunteer Stories from Home" is a bi-weekly video series highlighting the Museum's volunteer corps. Each volunteer comes from a different background…has a different connection to the U.S. Army…and has their own story of service to tell. All of them are passionate about the history, lessons, and values we can learn from the American Soldier. Hosted by the Army Historical Foundation, these video clips are just a glimpse into the lives of the Museum's volunteers. They are one of the Museum's most valuable assets, and they eagerly await for the Museum to reopen, so they can share the storied history of the U.S. Army and our nation. Sharon Kane is a retired LTC Army Nurse and a retired government employee and spent a total of 20 years in the Army including Active Duty and Reserves. She is also a military spouse. Her husband, also retired, COL Pat Kane served for 30 years. Pat and Sharon have three children (two of whom are military) and two grandchildren. Sharon graduated from the University of Maryland in 1973 with a B.S. in Nursing and attended the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing Program (WRAIN). She also earned a M.S. from Long Island University in Community Health Counseling. During her professional career, she was a Trainer and Facilitator in leadership courses for the Department of Homeland Security; a Professor for the Army Management Staff College at Fort Belvoir; and worked for the U.S. Army Family and MWR command and U.S. Army Community Service as well as volunteered in numerous organizations to include the Red Cross and Army Family Support Programs.
