Since its inception in 2011, Orchid Project has played two major roles in the end FGM/C sector: built a strong and united movement (for an issue often perceived as niche, this is essential), and produced critical data to ensure the issue gets the attention it deserves. Together, these efforts form a cohesive strategy to ending FGM/C. We have worked with 90 organisations across 7 countries to enhance their end FGM/C work, and we have united and mobilised organisations through regional Networks in Africa and Asia. Side by side, we elevate the issue in key spaces of influence, contribute to global action, address the glaring funding gap to end this issue, and hold decision-makers to account. This work has led to the adoption of the Kigali Declaration on Ending the Funding Gap for FGM, with signatures from more than 200 organisations. Our research on FGM/C has equipped hundreds of governments, NGOs, and UN agencies worldwide with the critical knowledge needed to strengthen efforts to end the practice. We have also leveraged groundbreaking research identifying FGM/C as a leading cause of girls’ mortality in Africa. Orchid Project’s plan is to fill the data gap on this issue, elevate the case for support to the sector (exposing FGM/C as one of the worst types of gender-based violence and a major barrier to health and well-being for millions of women), and to create a united collective movement that helps deliver commitment and action towards ending FGM/C.
