As with the preceding instalments, it featured one track from each release to represent the full spectrum of music on the label alongside an exclusive new track, ‘Old Father Time’ by Mink Freud, and continuous DJ mix, this time with DJ SpaceTerrapin at the controls. SpaceTerrapin’s mix took the music on a wonderful journey creating an immersive dreamscape that brought the cinematic qualities of See Blue Audio to the forefront. It’s the ascension of these qualities that created the spark of an idea to create a full visualisation of his mix, which is now presented as the fifty-sixth release on See Blue Audio and exclusively available on Bandcamp and YouTube. Artists represented on the compilation include Simon McCorry, Kuma, Lyli J, Bagaski, NRV, D-Fried, Isolated Community, Night Sky Pulse, Steve Hadfield, Rhombus Index and f5point6, and their releases include several albums and longform tracks as the label ventured into other musical territories and formats. As a champion of experimental and eccentric music across time with his ‘It Came From Enclosure Three’ and other radio shows, SpaceTerrapin was a natural choice to capture the more abstract and ambient side of See Blue Audio. With a musical kaleidoscope that embraces kosmische and exotica as well as the latest electronica, he used this special sensibility to tease and twist new sounds and dimensions out of the label’s recent catalogue. In short, SpaceTerrapin’s ‘See Blue Audio Anthology Three Mix’ is a cosmic musical odyssey through ever shifting time, space and mood. 90 minutes in length, it perfectly encapsulating the essence of See Blue Audio, a label which has always embraced the cinematic and atmospheric dimensions of electronic music. With its swathes of gently meandering sound, it simply begged to be the soundtrack to a motion picture of some kind; step forward Ti Duffield, a London-based video maker and photographer with a passion for the desert landscapes of the Southwestern United States, a geographical area including states like Arizona, New Mexico, California, Colorado, Utah and Texas. This is a region known for the vast and epic qualities of its natural world, but it’s also a place of highways and rail lines that stretch far into the horizon. Boundless empty stretches of land, at times almost devoid of human life, where sometimes the only motion comes from the lightest of desert winds. This is a visual aesthetic shared with See Blue Audio, where people are typically absent from cover artwork. A regular and knowledgeable visitor to these parts, Ti spent most of August 2024 travelling around and capturing what he saw on video, then editing it into a form that fits alongside the music. Filmed entirely on location in Kingman and Seligman, Arizona and Goffs, California – take Route 66 as a reference point – all the footage is video rather than photography, even when movement is almost imperceptible. Heat haze rising from black tarmac, freight trains snaking into the distance, a patchwork of yellow and orange hues dotted with bushes and rocks, and endless dry plains and hills under a piercing blue sky that can change to dark, turbulent clouds. The footage may often appear to be in slow motion, while at other times it speeds by; this is the part of the magic of these landscapes. Nature at its most elemental and with that mystical air that comes with the desert. There may be no apparent connection between the music and its visualisation; they exist independently of each other with no dialogue to bind them. Yet, somehow, they mesh together perfectly and there’s a synchronicity, even if it is happenchance, which has resulted in something very special. With no clear narrative to follow, this isn’t a visual experience that has to be watched in linear form. Think of this video more as an accompaniment to the music that can be dipped into when the moment strikes. Listen, watch and enter the dreamscape.
