What to Expect During DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction DIEP flap reconstruction can be performed during the same operation as mastectomy or at a later date. This depends on your personal preferences, or if you need to complete chemotherapy or radiation treatments. The surgery usually takes between three and six hours to complete and is performed under general anesthesia. During surgery, we make an incision on your lower abdomen and then transfer a portion of the tissue to your chest. Using advanced microsurgery, we attach the transplanted tissue to a new blood supply in your chest wall. The tissue will then be shaped to mimic a natural looking breast mound.
