One of the many areas of growth was having our girls spend time with our neighbor, Ms. Nancy, and learn how to care for sheep. They learned how to feed and care for mother sheep, helped with the birthing process, fed orphaned sheep, and raised them to adult size. Today’s video brings this past year to a complete circle. A month or so back, Ms. Nancy said that a few of the male sheep were becoming quite dangerous, ramming whoever came into their pen to feed them. Instead of selling them, she offered them to our family, and we graciously accepted. With that, the 3 oldest girls and I packed up our van and drove 7 hours back to our previous home to harvest 2 of her male sheep. It’s never easy for me to kill an animal, whether it be a small chicken, or now these bigger sheep. Life is a precious gift from God, and so I say a short prayer to thank Him for His provision, and I say thank you to the animals because I am taking their life. I feel very unworthy and dirty in the moment. At times like this, I am deeply reminded of the greatest story of all time- God’s redemption of his beloved children. As children of Adam and Eve, we are born with a sinful nature, and our sins pour forth day and night, deserving of God’s judgement, and wrath. Yet in His great love for us, He sent His perfect Son (the Lamb of God), Jesus Christ to come and die on a bloody cross to wash away our sins, restore our relationship with God, and give us eternal life. This is the greatest display of Love. I don’t take for granted the sacrifice these animals are giving that I might feed my family. Not to mention all the care that Ms. Nancy and the girls have given to these precious animals. It’s stressful, and messy, and so I say a simple prayer to God to help me have peace, and persevere, especially in these darker moments of life. We are grateful that through these animals, we can live. As a parents, Christy and I try to talk with our children about the value of life, the certainty of death, point to God’s provision for His children, and the eternal hope we have in Him. In today’s video Adeline turns different cuts of lamb into a delicious meal for the whole family. At the end of the video we share the butchering process (for those who would like to see how we did it) as an educational opportunity, not to share sensational content, but because we feel it important that we understand where our food comes from, and the work that goes into preparing it. For those who are squeamish seeing blood or butchering, feel free to skip the last part. For the rest of you, we hope you enjoy.
