PAPER LOOPS Season 2

Get the album!! 👉 https://felixcolgrave.bandcamp.com/ 👈 Longer versions of all the paper loop music, also by me. You may have seen these individually on my YouTube shorts, but here they are for you to watch again, or for the first time! So what are these? Why have I made so many?? Well, on my Patreon, I have a top tier where I send someone a drawing in the mail every month. I started Patreon to fund my animated film projects though, and not to do lots of drawings, so to make sure it didn’t eat into other projects I capped it at 25 people. That way I thought, I could just do a warm-up sketch every morning before work, and I’d have enough to send each month. But! I wasn’t that good at doing a warm-up drawing every day, so I’d often have a backlog of drawings to do at the end of each month, and it got hard thinking of 25 different things to draw each time. Then in 2020, I realised if the 25 drawings were frames within an animation, then I only had to think of ONE thing to draw each month, and simply draw the same thing 25 times, slightly differently! Those older loops are on my channel, but then I switched back to regular drawings for ages. The first couple loops in THIS video are from 2022, then I took another break, but since late 2023 I’ve managed to do one of these every single month. I haven’t stopped yet, but there are now so many that I had to draw a line in the sand and compile what I’ve got. I often see comments asking about the process, sometimes with very fundamental questions like, “how does he make the last drawing match the first” or “how does he get the paper in the same spot”. I don’t want people to assume that because it’s paper, everything is completely unplanned, unstructured and unaided. Not only did animators solve all these problems long before computers, but I live in the future and DO have a computer! You get a glance at my workstation right at the start of this video, but I’m using a camera connected to Dragonframe, a stop-motion program. It shows me a live camera feed, overlayed with the last thing I drew for reference. Or overlayed with any other frame, or whatever else I want, like guides for where to put the paper, layouts or even rough animation. It varies for each animation and I don’t plan every part of it, but rest assured I’m not figuring everything out in my head at once. Before computers, this kinda stuff was largely achieved with lightbulbs and tracing paper. One big advantage with Dragonframe is I can draw on good quality paper, which is nicer for whoever I send the drawing to. The biggest DOWNSIDE is that in order to see the last frame, I have to draw while looking at a video of my hands, instead of at my real hands. But there’s a lot you can do with it, and I’m excited to keep playing with this technique! I should also reiterate that these animations, just like the warm-up sketches they replaced, are a side gig that I do very quickly at the end of the month. The rest of the time I’m working primarily on an animated short film: WALL WORLD! Please check out the trailer on my channel, or sign up to my Patreon if you’d like to follow along as I make it. I think that’s all, thanks for reading!
