In this video, we take a look at the Tupolev Tu-91, a ground attack aircraft from the Soviet Union during the early Cold War. We first talk about why projects fail, from being inferior to others to not performing up to a promised standard, before moving into a weirder reason for failure: the design being considered ugly. We then talk about the efforts by the Soviet Union in preparing for the Cold War and potential combat against the United States, which involved building up a Navy and carrier-based aircraft. We talk about the Tupolev Tu-14, an initial attempt to construct a carrier-based attacker, and how it failed because of its size. We then move to the Project 507 design that utilized a turboprop engine, and how it was much more viable. We talk about the shift in the project to being a land-based aircraft, and it being given the name Tu-91. We talk about its solid performance, and how that meant nothing, as the Soviet leader simply found the plane ugly. We end by talking about how the Tu-91 could have been like the Soviet version of the Douglas A-1 Skyraider.
