On July 16, 2025, violent clashes erupted in Gopalganj, Bangladesh, between security forces and supporters of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resulting in at least four deaths and dozens of injuries, as confirmed by Manoj Barla, a nurse at Gopalganj District Hospital. The violence broke out during a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally at Poura Park, opposed by Hasina’s Awami League (AL) supporters, despite a May 2025 government ban on AL activities. Gopalganj, Hasina’s ancestral home and the site of her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s mausoleum, is politically sensitive. Eyewitnesses reported police firing on demonstrators, with a grocer in Chowrangi seeing two people collapse. Camera footage showed armed AL supporters attacking police with sticks and setting vehicles ablaze as NCP leaders arrived for their “March to Rebuild the Nation” program, launched July 1 to mark the 2024 uprising that ousted Hasina. Authorities imposed a curfew and blackout, deploying over 1,500 police and army personnel. The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, condemned the attack as a violation of rights, forming a committee to investigate.[](https://www.outlookindia.com/internat...)[](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/7...)[](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/7...)
