As a key driver of innovation for the forest-based sectors, DOST-FPRDI conducts an extensive R&D Program that ensures development of new technologies, processes and products. Under the R&D Program are six initiatives: The Bamboo and Other Non-Wood Forest Products (NWFP) Program advances the development of the Philippine bamboo industry and sectors that rely on other NWFPs through R&D. The Flavors and Fragrances from the Forest Technology Program (F3TP) aims to tap underutilized timber and non-timber forest products for food, medicine, flavors and essences. The program hopes to contribute in creating a globally competitive and sustainable forest flavors and fragrances industry in the Philippines. Gubat Obra Program is focusing on sustainable and aesthetic crafts from lesser-used forest products and processing wastes, forest-based creative products including furniture and handicrafts, bamboo musical instruments, wood carvings, and eco-friendly finishing wood stains. The Human Security and Defense Program explores the use of bamboo and abaca as affordable alternatives to imported human security and defense items and finding local substitutes to imported gums and resins as ingredients of propellants. The Climate Change and Environmental S&T program is set to study green, climate-smart products and processes using agro-forest residues and other biomass materials; and mitigate climate change. The Basic R&D Program identifies possible uses of some tree plantation species (TPS) by studying their wood properties and quality. It also aims to establish a preservative treatment procedure for TPS and try other possible sources and methods of preservation.
