4E’s and Fort Basinger Trailhead, Cornwell, FL

#sfwmd #fwc #floridahistory #hiking #trailrunning #gsdrescue #hikingwithdogs #runningwithdogs In today’s adventure we continued our way along US Hwy 98 into Cornwell, FL and explored the 4E’s public use area, as well as the Fort Basinger Trailhead. We enjoyed time on the trail and were rewarded with a beautiful sunset on the river. After returning home, I did an internet search on the area. Here are a couple of interesting stories that I found, about the history of these locations. It kinda makes me sad. I remember when I moved to this area in the 1990’s, they were rerouting the Kissimmee River back to its original route. They changed the flow back in the 1960’s to keep land from flooding, so it could be developed. 30 years later they realized the Everglades were drying up, endangering native wildlife, and our aquifer. SFWMD bought up all of the property in the path of the restoration, so a lot of history was torn down.
