IMPORTANT UPDATE: Please also check out a newer, alternative test method: • An alternative test of infant mattres... A SHORTER, SNAPPIER VERSION OF THIS VIDEO IS AVAILABLE AT • There's no law against a baby bed wit... This video illustrates two ways to objectively test for sufficient firmness in an infant mattress (or any other infant sleep surface, such as a bassinet). Four studies have linked OVERLY SOFT infant mattresses with suffocation. These sad events are referred to as 'sleep accidents' or Sudden Infant Death. Previously, tests of sufficient firmness in an infant mattress have been purely subjective (i.e. a matter of opinion rather than fact). One of the two objective tests illustrated here is for industry. It is specified in the Austraian/New Zealand Standard known as AS/NZS 8811.1:2013. More details about this standard, including where to purchase a copy, are shown in the video. The second of the two objective tests illustrated here is for consumers (i.e. ordinary parents and other interested people). This test was first published by Ronald L Somers in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, Volume 36, Issue 5, pages 490--491, October 2012. At the time this video was produced, one of the standards organizations in the USA was considering publishing a document similar to the one published in Australia and New Zealand. Officers in the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, CPSC, contributed to the refinement of the formal test method illustrated here. Safer infant mattresses are of interest to childcare organizations and hospitals, as well as to parents, grandparents, and others who care for infants.
