I built a compost toilet, largely based on the design and instructions from Jeff Lawtown (video linked below). The toilet was built with hand tools, off the shelf parts from the hardware store, and a few items lying around. The whole system cost around AU$200 to put together, with the wheelie bin the most expensive part at $120. Ideally two wheelie bins should be used - when the first bin is full, switch over to the second and give the full bin time to decompose. At 240 litres, the bin will take a long time to fill. However, it's still likely too small for the contents to fully compost down, so it will need to be emptied into a large compost bin (around 1 cubic metre) and left to fully decompose.
