The 18th-century Keraton Kasunanan was the royal family’s residence and today is a museum of heirlooms, while Mangkunegaran palace has an elaborately painted pavilion. Surakarta is also a major center for dyed batik fabric, which is displayed at the Danar Hadi museum.Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro is one of the city’s biggest traditional markets selling batik, as well as street foods, produce and more. The Pasar Klewer bazaar is also known for batik, while the Pasar Triwindu market specializes in antiques. Next to the Pasar Klewer is the Masjid Agung, or Great Mosque, featuring classical Javanese architecture. Surakarta’s traditional performing arts can be seen at Sriwedari Park, a cultural center featuring shadow-puppet shows and classical dance. Within Sriwedari is Radya Pustaka Museum, which exhibits cultural artifacts including gold carvings and gamelan musical instruments. Weather and Events: The climate is tropical, with a rainy season that peaks Dec–Apr. Many travelers choose to visit May–Aug, when rain and thunderstorms are less frequent.
