The medical and social models of disability are two ways of viewing disability: they shape how we view disability as a society as well as how we respond to people with disability. The social model of disability is a perspective shaped by people with disabilities themselves. It suggests that barriers in society disable people, for example, buildings without ramps or accessible toilets, or negative attitudes that assume people with disability are less capable. In contrast, the medical model of disability focuses on the person’s impairments or differences, viewing them as the problem. This approach emphasizes what is ‘wrong’ with the individual rather than identifying and addressing their needs. As a result, the medical model often leads to low expectations, reducing a person’s independence, choice, and control over their own life. In this short animation, learn more about the medical and social models of disability.
