Chámome Andy. Como vai? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Galician Language. Galician Language Galician is a Western Ibero-Romance language that evolved from medieval Galician-Portuguese, sharing a rich literary tradition with Portuguese before diverging under the influence of Castilian Spanish. Spoken today by over 2 million people, mainly in Galicia and neighboring regions of Spain, it has faced centuries of decline due to political marginalization, especially after Galicia’s absorption into the Crown of Castile and during Franco’s dictatorship. The 19th-century Rexurdimento revived Galician as a literary language, but generational language loss and social stigma continue to threaten its vitality despite its co-official status in Galicia today. The RAG norm, used officially in Galicia, is a standardized form of Galician developed by the Real Academia Galega, with spelling and vocabulary influenced by Spanish to distinguish Galician as a separate language within Spain. In contrast, the AGAL norm, promoted by the Associaçom Galega da Língua, follows a reintegrationist approach that aligns Galician orthography and grammar more closely with Portuguese, viewing Galician as a variety of the broader Portuguese language. Galician People The Galician people are a distinct cultural group in northwestern Spain, united by their language, Atlantic environment, and deep-rooted regional identity. Historically shaped by isolation, emigration, and a strong agrarian tradition, they are known for their resilience, pride in their heritage, and historical associations with Celtic ancestry. Many Galicians live abroad, maintaining strong emotional and cultural ties to their homeland, while those at home continue to cherish and revive their linguistic and folk traditions. Galician Culture Galician culture is a rich tapestry woven from folklore, music, cuisine, and rural traditions deeply connected to nature and the sea. Its music, often featuring the gaita (Galician bagpipe), tambourines, and polyphonic singing, is central to communal festivals and agrarian life. Myth and Catholic ritual blend in customs like Entroido (Carnival) and Noite de San Xoán. Culinary traditions—highlighted by polbo á feira (octopus), caldo galego, and Padrón peppers—reflect the region’s maritime and farming heritage. Despite urbanization and migration, Galicia preserves a unique identity rooted in its land, language, and living traditions.
