The President's guards rushed to protect him - but the real target was a man suspected of killing some of the 11 people being buried in KwaZulu Natal. Earlier Mandela had condemned the wave of murders sweeping his country. President Mandela arrived to pay his last respects to 11 people killed in increasing violence between A-N-C supporters and gunmen loyal to the Inkatha Freedom party. Mandela deplored the latest killings. SOUNDBITE: "I want to save life in this country. more than 20 000 people have died since 1984 the majority of them here. I want free and fair political activity. If I do not have the power to stop this senseless slaughter and to ensure there is free and fair political activity I declare that I am going to amend the constitution. Mandela's bodyguards formed a human shield to protect the 76-year-old South African leader as the gunfire was heard about 20 meters (yards) from him. Officials of Mandela's African National Congress said that the shots were fired into the air by a crowd member trying to protect a man suspected of taking part in the May 9 massacre near Durban. It was unclear if anyone was hit - but one report says a man was wounded in the shooting. Witnesses said members of the 5-thousand strong crowd kicked the suspected killer before riot police pulled him out of the mob. Earlier hundreds gathered in a frenzy of emotion to pay their last respects to the 11 dead. Last year's multiracial elections only brought a temporary lull in the political murders and fighting. Since then violence between A-N-C and Inkatha supporters has steadily escalated.
