Explore the biodiverse ecosystems of Suriname through our video series “Forest Types of Suriname”, presented by Frits van Troon, a Saramacca Maroon biodiversity expert and tireless advocate for the protection of Suriname’s forests. In this episode, we explore marsh savanna forest of the Zanderij Belt. In this forest, common trees include the morisi palm (Mauritia flexuosa) and blackaberi (Humiria balsaminifera). Stands of morisi palms are like miniature ecosystems as they provide food and shelter to many organisms, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects. Inland from Suriname’s coastal plain lie deep deposits of white and brown sand known as the Zanderij or Savanna Belt. This formation runs roughly east-west and covers only 5% of Suriname’s land area. The vegetation here is adapted to nutrient-poor, drier soils and includes savanna forest, marsh forest, and open savanna. This is one of the most threatened ecosystems in Suriname due to urban development, sand mining, uncontrolled fires and logging.
