In 2020, Ukraine passed China as the leading country from which Americans adopted children. However, since the war started, Ukrainian officials have frozen out of country adoptions due to the stress the war has put on government resources. The situation has left many Ukrainian orphans and adoptees in a vulnerable position, hoping the adoption process can begin again soon. Dr. Rick Morton, an adoptive father of 3 Ukrainian children with special needs and the Senior Vice President of Engagement at Lifeline Children's Services, joins to set the scene and explain why Ukraine became such a hotspot for Americans to adopt children. Dr. Rick discusses how the war threw the adoption process into chaos and how this impacts Ukrainian orphans and other potential adoptees. He tells us more about what his organization is doing to step in and what avenues they have to get adoptions going again.
