But how do you change school culture? Well, McDougle Middle School has some ideas. When McDougle Middle School returned to in-person learning, they faced major challenges – like many schools. Student behavior problems increased significantly, while social-emotional skills had decreased. Teachers, overwhelmed by behavior problems, were suffering from low morale. Mental health, across the community, needed support. McDougle's Assistant Principal, Jaimi West, realized that to fix these problems, her team had to re-invest in their school culture. To do this, they implemented House Points, which incentivizes good behaviors, fosters teamwork, and creates a sense of community and shared goals for students, staff, and teachers. But McDougle Middle School didn't stop there. Their House Points system also celebrates student culture and backgrounds, makes teachers the heroes, and (bonus) doesn't cost the school any money for rewards. Students, staff, admins, teachers, AND parents love it. How they achieved this in just a few short months, that's what Jaimi shared in this video.
