The coronary artery is the main artery that supplies blood flow to the heart. Typically, a heart attack is caused by a blockage in the coronary artery. Calcium and cholesterol don’t cause damage to the arteries, they act as band-aids to repair arteries that have been damaged. This damage and inflammation is largely caused by high levels of insulin and can eventually lead to a heart attack. The coronary artery calcium test (CAC test) is the direct measurement of the amount of damage in the coronary artery. The CAC test gives insight into a person’s lifestyle and diet and can predict cardiovascular health. It is important to note that a high CAC score can occur with normal cholesterol levels. A coronary artery calcium test is quick and simple, and costs around $100. You can have normal triglycerides, blood sugar, and cholesterol, and still have calcium build up in the arteries. Around 50 percent of the time, a person can die of a heart attack with no symptoms at all, so don’t let it catch you by surprise. Many doctors don’t push the CAC test for a number of reasons. If you have a high CAC score, there isn’t a general consensus on what to do about it. The problem is, calcium build-up in your coronary artery can’t be corrected with a drug.
