This is the famous 'Gibson Girl' emergency radio. It is entirely hand-crank powered. It is an MCW (AM modulated with a CW tone) transmitter that automatically sends SOS or AA and a TONE, user can also manually send. There is no receiver on board. It operates at 500 KHz with a LC tank oscillator. It appears to use plate modulation. More info on the history of this and other survival radios: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survival... Basic idea is that if you have survived a ship wreak or something where you would be floating in a raft you could deploy the antenna by kite or balloon (per instructions on top panel) and start cranking!
