On February 9, 2015 during our 10 day Baja Sunshine Motorcycle Tour we visited Baja California's Bahia San Ignacio marine sanctuary. Each year in January and February thousands of grey whales, having migrated from Alaskan waters, gather to mate and give birth in these warm and shallow protected waters. These gentle giants are baleen whales - filter feeders - and often seem just as curious about us we are of them. They measure up to 49 feet long and can weigh up to 36 tonnes. In this video you can see some highly unusual behavior. This female and her calf spent the better part of an hour either next to or under our boat. You see her repeatedly turn on her back in order to scratch her chin or belly on the boats's keel. This is evidenced by the main flippers, or pectoral fins, waving about in the air. What you can't experience in the video is how a 30 tonne whale intent on dealing with an itch moves a 20 foot panga (open boat) about with ease. It was all good fun and we hope for similar experiences on our next tours there. Look for more information here: http://www.peakrider.com/adv2016-Baja...
