La Rochelle. It's hard to believe that 400 years ago, this popular seaside destination was the scene of one of the bloodiest sieges in the history of France! The city was the largest protestant base in France during the Wars of Religion, and for the Catholic King, Louis XIII, it was the last stronghold needing to be abolished before he could reign fully over the country. But conquering La Rochelle wasn't so simple... La Rochelle is a city that is hard to access, nestled at the back of a bay and surrounded by streams and marshes. In the Middle Ages, the port was fortified with the construction of its 3 iconic towers: the Chain, Saint-Nicholas, and Lantern towers. But it is in modern times that the city's defences exploded. The siege compound: 6 large bastions, a huge, 3 km-long wall, and an enormous circumvallation wall linking together 8 fortresses. In 1627, the King launched a siege project with Cardinal Richelieu, his chief minister. This great military strategist was categorical: if they could not enter the fortified city, they would starve its inhabitants! Richelieu had a crazy idea. They would build an enormous dam to close the bay. 1,500 m long, 20 m high, 50 sunken ships to serve as foundations... This tremendous military structure would be built in barely 6 months. Which would fall first, the dam or the fortress?
