Getragen doch nich zu langsam - Etwas bewegter - Etwas bewegter: 15:26 Korngold's "Fairy Tale Pictures" (Märchenbilder) was composed in the summer of 1910, at the age of thirteen. They were dedicated to the Archduke Eugen, who supported the child prodigy. Originally scored for solo piano, the suite was orchestrated under the tutelage of Alexander Zemlinsky in late 1910. This orchestration was performed only once in a closed rehearsal in Karlsbad on June 27 of 1911. It had never been published (or indeed performed) until the BBC Philharmonic gave the world public premiere on June 11 of 1997, before an invited audience on the occasion of Korngold's second centenary. This suite represents Korngold’s earliest extant attempt at orchestration. Each movement reflects the characteristic mood of its story, and the music is full of attractive, distinctive melodies. Korngoldian elements are clearly discernible. For example, listening to "The Enchanted Princess", one is immediately reminded of the Sherwood scenes from "The Adventures of Robin Hood". It is remarkable how confident, typical and consistent the orchestral style is, given the age of the composer. Sadly, the orchestration of the original second movement (The Princess and the Pea) has been lost. The first movement is preceded by the following scene: "A little princess dreams behind rose bushes: When will the knight come galloping to wake her? Hark, the sound of hooves...! Oh, need - past the gate! Princess sinks and dreams as before...". It begins with a main theme in form of a chromatic march, introduced by low strings and woodwinds. It is answered by a more melodic idea. These two form the basis of the movement, reaching a highly rich and expressive climax. A brief return to the march theme leads to a low-key coda. The second movement refers to the mountain spirit Rübezahl with the following: "Pack of people! Idiots! Are you looking for me? Fog over here!! I have disappeared..." It opens with a playful main theme, followed by a widely lyrical second theme on woodwinds and strings. The main theme returns and grows in a vigorous climax. The second theme briefly returns before the movement ends with a C major chord. The third movement describes gnome-like creatures will this description: "It trips and patters and whispers through the house. Scurry, scurry... bell one!... out the door...!". It begins with a rhythmic main theme dominated by woodwinds. It then transforms in a charming dance-like variation. A brief return to its original form leads to a repeat of the variation, ending with the music fragmenting itself. The fourth movement depicts a ball with the following text: "The trains rustle to the rejoicing of the violins. The fairy-tale dance of beauty shimmers brightly". It opens with a richly evocative main theme in form of a waltz. The central part modulates through a series of keys while forte-piano dynamic contrasts take place. This leads to a return to the waltz theme in all its splendour, ending with a colourful coda. The fifth movement sets the scene with the following: "Smack, smack! Seven in one go...! Hail, hero Zwirn from the ironing kingdom!" It begins with a solemn and heroic main theme, introduced in piano by strings before unfolding in a playful and charming way. It is contrasted by a widely lyrical and romantic main theme, representing a princess. The main theme returns and reaches a powerful climax, ending with a peaceful coda. The sixth movement is an epilogue preceded by this text: "Once upon a time..." One last murmur, then the sun trembles brightly through the hedge. Now, people, stop dreaming and wondering - go into your day with renewed courage!". It opens with a mysterious introduction, before a richly romantic and expressive theme is exposed, reaching a central peak before the music slowly vanishes in a gentle and nostalgic coda.
