Hoda Ali is a nurse, educator and human rights activist known for her advocacy against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Ali was born in Somalia where she underwent FGM at the age of seven, which lead to long-lasting health implications. This traumatic event and its after effects has fuelled Ali’s activism against FGM and violence against women and girls. Since moving to the UK Ali has worked as a Sexual Health Nurse, supporting thousands of patients including FGM survivors; co-founder and trustee of the Vavengers, an organisation dedicated to raising awareness of FGM; and Community Outreach Project Manager for Safeguarding at Perivale Primary School, one of the first institutions to establish a programme focussed on FGM education. Following the success of 100 Black Women Who Have Made A Mark, Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage is delighted to launch a new project for 2026; Making the Invisible Visible: Black Women 365 Days of the Year. Each day will showcase a different woman, whose story has shaped Black British or global Diasporic history; many of whom remain overlooked or under-celebrated in mainstream narratives. This will take the form of a rolling programme of short films, released throughout the year to keep these stories in daily circulation and to create an evolving constellation of leadership, resistance, artistry and enduring impact.
