Dred and Harriet Scott sued for their freedom in 1846. They were one of the hundreds of people who filed similar suits. Their case gained international attention and the precedent it established is often cited as a precursor to the Civil War. Cicely Hunter, public historian at the Missouri Historical Society, returns to discuss what led up to their 11-year litigation and what life was like for enslaved people like the Scotts to live in legal limbo while their cases were being litigated.
