Sagat is the champion of the International Martial Arts Tournament. No one was ever capable of bringing him down, until Ryu showed up. Ryu represents the dragon, while Sagat represents the tiger. This is a strong idiom in Chinese culture where two powerful forces of nature collide to see who's the strongest. Sagat, being the final boss, is a bit tougher here. He can read a lot of Ryu's moves and block them before they hit him. He can even block his Hadoken. Sagat also wields his Tiger Shot and Tiger Knee in this game, but no Tiger Uppercut yet. His Tiger Shot is powerful enough to still hit Ryu even when he's blocking. Overall, Sagat is kinda cheap in this game, but it's not impossible to beat him, because I do, here. -------------- Some sources state that Ryu finished Sagat off in the tournament by hitting him with a Satsui no Hadou-powered Shoryuken a.k.a. the Metsu Shoryuken, which is what gave Sagat his signature chest scar. This was in response to Ryu almost being beaten by Sagat. He got desperate and couldn't control himself! This Metsu Shoryuken would return in Super Street Fighter IV, though Ryu aims for his opponents' jaw instead of their chest in that game. Despite the ending dialogue, later games confirmed that Sagat swears vengeance on Ryu for giving him that painful scar. -------------- This is the end of the first saga of Street Fighter. Although Street Fighter II implies that its story follows this one, the later Street Fighter Alpha series is actually the one to take place after the first Street Fighter. From that, it's Alpha that precedes II. Being labeled "King of the Hill", Ryu goes back home to Japan to tell his master Gouken the good news, but you won't see that here. That's just the beginning of Alpha. The Alpha series would begin the decades-long storyline of Ryu learning to control his Satsui no Hadou and not allowing Akuma to take advantage of it. The Alpha series is also the true beginning of M.Bison, the ruler of Shadaloo, and how the heroes of Street Fighter constantly clash against him and his top henchmen. Both of these storylines would not be completed until Street Fighter V, released over 30 years after this, the very first Street Fighter game. Thanks for watching!
