The text for Psalm 150 speaks of the praise of God through voice and instrument - many instruments! How do you turn that into music without it becoming overly complicated or fussy? Well, what makes music work? Melody, harmony, tempo, dynamics and voicing. Change all of these at the same time and your average listener in a church setting may become lost. So having listened to other settings of this text that were rhythmically complex in terms of a regularly changing meter, I decided to stick in 3/4 all the way through (save for the last verse) allowing the listener to enjoy the colors of the words without being distracted. Listen out for trumpets, strings (using the open strings of the instruments), harp, pipe and dance motifs - all in 3/4. And, as this was commissioned by the Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival (Hartford CT) I used the entire compass of the organ for the last line of music. Hey, why not! Enjoy, Philip x
