In this video, I have explained system software. I went ahead to talk about the types of system software and how important they are to the computer and users. I discussed also, the functions of operating system and a process and its states. SYSTEM SOFTWARE System software refers to a collection of programs that manage and control the functioning of a computer system. It is designed to control the hardware components of a computer and provide a platform for running application software. TYPES OF SYSTEM SOFTWARE 1. Device drivers: Device drivers are software that allows the operating system to communicate with hardware devices, such as printers, keyboards, and mice. 2. Programming language translators: Programming language translators, such as compilers and interpreters, are system software that enable developers to create application software that can run on the computer system. 3. Utility software: Utility software is a system software that helps to analyse, optimise, manage, maintain and control a computer. Utility software perform certain tasks like deletion of unwanted files, data backup, installation and uninstallation, virus detection and removal, etc. Some examples are: antivirus software, file management tools, disk management tools, compression tools, etc. 4. Operating system: Operating system (OS) is a system software that acts as an interface between the user and the computer hardware and controls the execution of all kinds of programs on the computer. TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM 1. Single-user or personal-user operating system 2. Multi-user operating system 3. Batch operating system 4. Network operating system 5. Real-time operating system 6. Mobile operating system FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEM A. Processor Management: In multiprogramming, the operating system decides which process gets the processor when and for how much time. This function is called process scheduling. In the processor management the following takes place: 1. There is a traffic controller which keeps track of the processor and the status of the process. 2. Allocation and de-allocation of the Central Processing Unit to a process. B. Memory Management: The operating system does the following for memory management; 1. It keeps track of primary memory that is, which part of the memory is in use and which one is free. 2. In multiprogramming the operating system decides which process will get memory when and how much. c. Allocation and de-allocation of memory. C. File Management: A file system is normally organised into directories for easy navigation and usage. In file management the operating system does the following; 1. It keeps track of information, location, uses and status of the file system. 2. It decides who gets the resources. 3. Allocation and de-allocation of resources. D. Device Management: An operating system manages device communication through their respective drivers. It does the following activities for device management; 1. It keeps track of all devices and it is done by the I/O controller. 2. It decides which process gets the device when and for how much time. 3. Allocation and de-allocation of devices in an efficient way. E. Security: It prevents unauthorised access to programs and data by means of password and other similar techniques. F. Job accounting: It keeps track of time and resource used by various job and users. G. Communication management: Coordination and assignment of compilers, interpreters, and other software resources to the various users of the computer systems. PROCESS AND ITS STATES A process in operating system is a program in execution. A process can be in one of several states in an operating system, depending on its current state of execution. These states are: 1. New 2. Ready 3. Running 4. Waiting/Suspended/Blocked 5. Terminated Download the lecture slide below! LET US GET IN TOUCH !
