Ash Wednesday | Isaiah 58:1-12 | Pastor Kendall Koenig One of the great dangers of a life of outwardly expressed faith is that it doesn't reflect any inward change. In other words, hypocrisy. But there is another danger as well--of expressing religious fervor, but treating others like they are not important. And in Isaiah's day this was rampant. There was great religiosity, but justice was overlooked. And God uses the prophet Isaiah to call that out, to name the simple crucial fact that God's people were "missing the point." Jesus picked this up by tying these two different foci inextricably together--Love God and Love your Neighbor. As we enter Lent we are again asked to consider--are they tied together in our lives or not.
