Dr. Venkata Boppana B, Consultant – Urology & Uro-Oncology at Narayana Health RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, shares the successful case of Ms. Samima Mumtaj, a 50-year-old woman referred with a suspected adrenal mass. After further evaluation with a CT urogram, a small renal mass was discovered. Ms. Mumtaj was presented with several surgical options, including open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches, and chose the robotic route. Dr. Boppana and his team performed a retroperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy, a novel and minimally invasive approach to treating kidney tumors. The robotic surgery allowed for 10x magnification, superior precision with 360° instrument articulation, and minimal blood loss. The surgery was smooth with no intraoperative complications, no blood transfusion required, and no drains. Ms. Mumtaj experienced minimal postoperative pain and was discharged within 24 hours. A biopsy confirmed the presence of a T1 tumor with clear margins. She is now under regular follow-up care. This case highlights the effectiveness of robotic surgery and its many benefits, such as minimal scarring, faster recovery, and enhanced precision, making it a preferred choice for kidney tumor surgeries.
