The absolute pinnacle of timbering artistry is a method of timber setting known as 'square set'. Square set timber are large beams with notches on either end that are press-fit together to form a scaffolding-like structure. Square set mining methods were common in the late 1800's, but quickly lost popularity after more efficient stoping methods were developed. Square set timbering was also really only advantageous with wide 'shoots' of ore. Many rich shoots were near the surface and were thus often mined first. Additionally, expansive ore bodies were less common at increasing depth, and thus as mines became deeper, the need for square set timbering lessened. All this to say, intact square set timbering is not all too common. Especially square sets from the 1800's. What's really hard to believe about this mine is that all the timbering is over 150 years old. But it still looks, and even smells brand new! Much of the Highland Mine consists of meandering drifts, intersections and odd stopes. Since the mine is fairly popular and easy to access, there are no remaining artifacts in the mine. Unfortunately, this is becoming more and more common as mine exploring expands in popularity.
