How to grow sponge gourd from seed | sponge gourd plant growing |sponge gourd harvest Sponge gourd growing from seed to harvest shown in this video, no harmful chemicals were used grown under organic way. A full update on growing luffa or sponge gourd with useful tips is given in subtitles, below are some useful links to buy seed and compost. OVERVIEW I shared my entire journey of growing sponge gourd or also called luffa, in this video. First, try to collect or buy quality seeds from a nearby nursery or online(links given in the description to buy online). I highly recommend going for the best seeds, else your entire journey of growing sponge gourd will go to waste and will demotivate you eventually. After choosing the right seeds now you have to pick your potting mix if you are going to plant at your terrace or balcony, If you have a gardening area in your backyard you can add some compost and start your planting. Sponge gourd can be planted directly or transplanted, I sowed directly in the soil. Sow three to four seeds for a higher germination rate so that in the end you can keep at least two healthy plants according to your size and area of the garden, After all this process all you need to do is wait, Let nature do its business. The luffa plant is a warm-season plant and needs to be started in the spring after the cool season has finished, sometime around April, These are climbers and need support or any kind of trellis to spread their branches. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 3-G CUTTING It is a technique practice to get a high yield in gourds this can be used for all gourds, Here when the plant reaches the height of seven to eight feet or it has 10 to12 leaves from the bottom snip the tip of the primary or main stem and after few days it will start producing side shoots also called as secondary branches, when the secondary branches have eight to ten leaves snip/cut the tip again, This will force the plant to produce third-generation branches. this technique is practiced because the primary branches will produce more male flowers which will not turn into fruits secondary branches will also produce more male and less female but the third generation will produce more female than compare to male flowers, if you are doing rooftop gardening I recommend you for 3-g cutting or else you can leave it to mother nature. POLLINATION Reproduction in plants occur to a process called pollination when the pollinators like bees and other insects transfer pollen of male flower to the female flower, So to attract pollinators you should have a flower garden or I recommend you to do hand pollination, its simple take the male flower as shown in the video and spread the pollen into female flower, PEST In the initial stages after the plant has been shifted outdoors, it is susceptible to many pests, mainly aphids, to remove insects spray water in the morning time on the leaves to make sure it got rid of all pests, and in the evening spray some neem oil or any homemade organic pesticide. If you spray water in the evening due to waterlogging on top of leaves it can get fungal diseases like powdery mildew so spray water on sunny days and pesticide in the evening because it should stay on the leaves for maximum time. COMPOST compost is necessary for plants to grow fast and be healthy all time, adding nice organic manure will boost the plant growth and make it resistant to pest and diseases. WATERING These plants require moist soil all time, or the gourds will become bitter so keep the soil moist check whether the top of the soil is dry or wet, if it is dry then your plants are thirsty, If moist wait until it gets dry. HARVEST After all, this awaits you are set to go for a nice harvest you can harvest sponge gourd when they are tender, the sponge gourd plant will give you its tasty luffa/sponge gourd after all the time you invested in your plant. "If you want from nature then you have to give something to it".
