IVF or In-Vitro Fertilization (also known as Test tube baby) is a type of assisted reproductive technological procedure, where the egg of a woman is retrieved from her body and taken to an IVF laboratory where it comes in contact with the husband’s sperm and completes the process of fertilization. This fertilized egg is then put back into the woman’s body where it may lead to a successful pregnancy and delivery of a child. The following are the steps involved in an IVF procedure that takes place in an IVF lab: A basic evaluation of the husband and the wife. The woman is then given hormonal injections in order to stimulate her ovaries and produce more eggs. This is closely monitored through sonography or blood tests. Once the eggs are considered to be ready, they are retrieved from the woman with the help of sonography and a small procedure with general anesthesia. Once the eggs are removed, fertilization in lab is done with the husband’s sperm and is left to develop in the IVF laboratory for up to 5 days. This results in the formation of embryos. Out of all the embryos that are formed, one or a maximum of two of the best embryos are chosen and inserted into the woman with the help of a fine catheter. In the general process of IVF, 50,000 sperms are put together in one egg, out of which, one of them fertilizes the egg on its own. In some cases, either the egg fails to fertilize, or the husband’s sperm count is so low, that even 50,000 sperms are not found to complete the IVF process. In these cases, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is another option. In this procedure, a single sperm is selected and injected directly into the egg. This ensures that the sperm fertilizes the egg and there is a higher possibility of achieving pregnancy.
