CELEBRATING LOU REED, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO Having never seen Lou Reed live and with an incredible lineup of Australian musical talent, I thought this was one not to miss. There were two sets, with each of the five lead singers performing in turn during both sets. A total of 25 songs plus an unplanned/unrehearsed encore. I didn’t record any of Stefanie Duzel’s Nico songs but I did capture these eleven (far more than I had initially intended): Stupid Man (Dave Graney) (00:23) Satellite of Love (Rob Snarski) (03:39) Kill Your Sons (Mick Harvey) (07:28) What Goes On (Robert Forster) (11:50) Caroline Says II (Rob Snarski) (16:02) Perfect Day (Rob Snarski) (19:48) The Bed (Mick Harvey) (23:19) Pale Blue Eyes (Robert Forster) (28:56) Walk on the Wild Side (Robert Forster) (35:25) Sweet Jane (Robert Forster) (40:51) Rock & Roll (Dave Graney, Stefanie Duzel and Robert Forster) (46:31) The Sydney performance received mostly positive comments on social media, although some thought the choice of songs could have been better, and others thought more rehearsal time would have helped. On that latter point, I’m sure most on stage would have agreed. They had only had a day and a half together in Sydney to smooth it all out. Personally, aside from a couple of frustrating technical hiccups, I thought it was an enjoyable night with some great guitar playing. However, I was a little disappointed that none of Lou’s later songs were performed. OK, so who were the incredible Australian musicians? Firstly, the singers: Robert Forster (The Go-Betweens), Mick Harvey (The Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party), Dave Graney (Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes), Rob Snarski (The Blackeyed Susans, SnarskiCircusLindyBand), Stefanie Duzel. And the band were: Robbie Warren (Died Pretty), Barton Price (Models, The Winged Heels), Roger Mason (Models), Paul McDonald (Glide, the Gin Palace, Steve Kilbey) and Mark Tobin (Caligula, the Gin Palace, Steve Kilbey). Well worth the ticket price just to see all of them on stage together.
