UK independent parliamentary candidates spoke to MEE about their decisions to run as independents during a pro-Palestine protest in London on Saturday. Andrew Feinstein, Ajmal Masroor and Tanushka Marah told MEE reporter Mohammad Saleh their decision to run independently in the UK general election was primarily inspired by taking a stand against the genocide in Gaza. Andrew Feinstein, a pro-Palestinian activist who is running in the UK general election in Labour leader Keir Starmer’s constituency, said neither Labour nor the Conservative Party “is prepared to demand an unqualified ceasefire or an immediate halt to arms sales to Israel” which has pushed pro-Palestine candidates to run “to give people a real choice”. Ajmal Masroor, the independent parliamentary candidate for Bethnal Green and Stepney, said the upcoming election should be “an election of moral compass” as people are “sick and tired of watching the genocide in Palestine” with no action from the UK government. The three candidates criticised the Labour Party’s stance in the war on Gaza. “Labour are operating like a badly run mafia organisation at the moment,” said Tanushka Marah, the independent parliamentary candidate for Hove and Portslade. The UK general election was called by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on 4 July. Most candidates represent established political parties, but a wave of independents are also standing.
