On 24th May 2025, the Madhyanchal Students' Association at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) organised the 'Madhyanchal Utsav', a vibrant celebration dedicated to the rich culture and heritage of Madhya Pradesh. The event aimed to showcase the diverse traditions, art forms, and history of the region. The highlight of the evening was a grand cultural programme featuring a variety of performances that reflected the essence of Madhya Pradesh. Among these was a powerful rendition of Aalha Gayan, a traditional folk form that resonates deeply with the people of the Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand regions. The Aalha Khand, the epic on which the performance was based, was composed in the 12th century by Jagnik, the court poet of the Chandela king Parmardi Dev (Paramal) of Mahoba. It immortalizes the legendary bravery and heroic deeds of Aalha and Udal, two valiant commanders who served under King Paramal. Over the centuries, Aalha has transcended its origins to become a cherished part of the oral tradition, sung on various occasions to evoke courage, honour, and regional pride. Through Madhyanchal Utsav, the JNU Madhyanchal Students’ Association not only paid homage to the region's cultural legacy but also created a space for students from across India to engage with and appreciate the living traditions of Madhya Pradesh. --- #jnu #jnustudents #heritage #mptourism #aalha #aalhaudal #culturalheritage
