In a tradition, many centuries old, going back to the time of the Spanish conquerors, the baroque city of Modica, Sicily in Italy has a special Easter tradition. It recognizes the suffering the Virgin Mary bore during the crucifixion of Christ. A giant marionette of Mary meets the statue of Christ in the street. Her garb transforms from the black of mourning to a joyful vibrant blue veil and gold embroidered red gown. Doves fly as she greets her son, the risen Christ, with a maternal Easter kiss.
