Lecture 24 Out of Eden: The Spread of Homo sapiens

How did humanity spread around the world? We begin by looking at the Great Leap Forward and the transition to behaviorally modern humans. We then examine traits shared by all living and historic cultures that seem to be lacking in our closest extinct kin: potential behavioral autapomorphies of Homo sapiens. We discuss the genetic history of living and prehistoric population and the discovery of so-called "Mitochondrial Eve" and "Y-Chromosome Adam". We then look at the discovery of introgression (significant cross-species hybridization) with Neanderthals and Denisovans among some modern peoples. We concentrate then on tracing the spread of human bands around the world, with particular emphasis on the colonization of the Americas and some of the (sometimes rancorous) debates about the timing of this event.
