This is the worst exercise if you have ulcerative colitis. Read on below. COACHING: https://stevenroot.co/enquire-coaching/ If you've been watching my channel for a while, you'll know that I promote lifestyle factors as being vitally important for healing from Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn's disease, and one of those is exercise. So if you include exercise into your regime to heal from ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, then you are absolutely doing the right thing. However, you may want to think of the best TYPE of exercise that will support your healing. There is a very common exercise that may not actually be the best idea for those people with Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's disease, and that's running. I'm sure anyone who has done even a moderate amount of running will have noticed some urgency over the years. I certainly noticed this when I was training for the Paris marathon a few years ago, and then again recently too. I went for a run a couple of months ago and about a half hour after my run I was walking down the street where I live and had to dash into a restaurant to use the restroom.. This prompted me to look into it, because I've been symptom free for a long time now. I'll start by quoting a couple of studies, and I will link to them down below. "30% to 81% of runners report gastrointestinal complaints, which include bloating, abdominal cramps, rectal incontinence, and gastrointestinal bleeding." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti... In fact, running specifically can be such an instigator of UC like symptoms, that the abdominal cramps & other symptoms that often follow a run are called runner's colitis or runner's trots! The medical, or proper name, is ischemic colitis. Ischemia is a restriction in blood supply. "All that bouncing up and down can actually jostle your organs and push food through your digestive tract faster, explains Peyton Berookim, M.D., F.A.C.G., director of the Gastroenterology Institute of Southern California. At the same time, some of the blood that normally flows to your intestines is being diverted away toward your leg muscles. All of these factors can mess with your digestion and leave you feeling queasy or like you need to find a bathroom right away. Hormones can also play a role. High-endurance exercise like running signals the release of the stress hormone cortisol, which can contribute to that sensation of having to go, Berookim says. And the anxiety and pressure that can sometimes come with racing only make things worse." https://www.runnersworld.com/nutritio...
