Yeah Utah is a state that isn't talked about much and I don't think I have to be the one to tell you WHY. The same statement applies to weather in Utah, as the most extreme forms of weather in Utah boil down to flooding, blizzards, heat waves, etc. But there was one time where Utah, more specifically it's capital, came face to face with one of nature's most terrifying beasts. On August 11, 1999, what started out as a cloudy day in the Capital, quickly became one that the residents of the city would never forget. An isolated, F2 tornado touched down and moved through Downtown Salt Lake City, causing millions in damages as it caught Salt Lake City by surprise. The city has seen only a handful of tornadoes in total since records have been kept, but it was the 1999 F2 that left the biggest impact on the capital. While not the strongest tornado observed in the state, the damage observed in Salt Lake City was severe enough to consider the F2 Tornado to be the worst tornado in the state’s history. So today, I will be taking a look at the Salt Lake City F2 tornado, the state of severe weather so far in 1999, the synopsis, the tornado itself, the aftermath, and the legacy it has.
