YOTAM HABER, Estro Poetico-armonico II (performed by Meitar Ensemble at the 2014 Venice Biennale)

commissioned by the Harvard Fromm Foundation My Estro Poetico-Armonico II is based on the magnificent fifty psalm settings of Benedetto Marcello, a contemporary of J.S. Bach, who paraphrased or elaborated the liturgical music of the Venetian Jewish community of his time. Without any possibility to verify such a claim, nor really requiring any such proof for my artistic license, I imagined that one generation passed on to another its musical traditions (from the destruction of the second Temple in Jerusalem to Marcello’s 18th century Venice, and beyond to our own time), and through a sort of telephone-game evolution, this music lost or gained its essence on each transference. EPAII is a re-imagining/re-hearing/re-creation, like a painting left out in the rain, slowly changing, new colors mixing and coming into being.
