Devon Dowsers visit to Hartland Abbey in North Devon (Jun 98) Hartland Parish lies at the northwest extremity of Devon with Hartland Point and Quay jutting out into the Atlantic with its impressive high cliffs and strata, often to near vertical caused by folds and fault lines from millennia ago. Here, from the howling blast of stormy winds off the sea most trees and hedges grow with a 45-degree lean unless more sheltered inland. Hartland Abbey, set in a valley a mile inland and was visited by DD in June 1998 and was filmed by our then video recorder, Tony Heath, who was a member. The house was built from 1197 being part of the Abbey and the visit went onto include St Nectan’s Well and nearby St Nectan’s Church at Stoke, which is Hartland village’s main church, often referred to as N Devon’s own Cathedral, as it is so big. Richard Sears, 2024.
