This past weekend my hometown Club , ‪@OaklandRoots‬ was able to accomplish something pretty Massive as They sold out the infamous Oakland Coliseum at a Capacity of 26,575 Mind you they were only planning on selling a max of 15k seats but the demand was too high. Despite being in the 2nd tier in US Football, that was a higher attendance than 11 out of the 14 MLS matches that were going during the same weekend. INFACT, that alone is a higher CAPACITY than many other MLS clubs, including their poorly run Neighbors the SJ Earthquakes who at most are able to fill 18k At Paypal Park. In Fact it was even more that Bournemouth vs Brentford in the Prem. Again, not bad for a 2nd division team. So you might be asking yourself, Who the heck are The Oakland Roots and where do they Even play? Well to answer the latter first, The Roots currently find themselves in the USL, which on paper is considered the 2nd tier of US Soccer (i'm going to call it soccer for the sake of the video but we all know its football). However due to the complicated nature of how US Soccer formats even work, USL realistically ends up being an entirely different League that is competing against MLS to come out as top dog. As you know, Clubs have to pay MASSIVE fee’s in order to join the corporate world of MLS and it's all a crazy mess with Salary caps and so on. The USL more so takes the approach of almost all other Leagues in the world by allowing teams to join on a meritocracy, even going as far as integrating a Relegation/ Promotion system within US Soccer formats to essentially directly combat MLS. USL prides its self in being a league that is home to dozens of teams that are all vital parts of their communities. Again, emphasizing how they are taking the approach that closest resembles most leagues around the world. And this is where a Club like the Oakland Roots is able to Flourish and directly impact the market that the Corporate San Jose Earthquakes have TRIED to capture. Since the club's inception, The Roots have directly been tied to their community and given the people of Oakland a Soccer Club that they can truly love. Oakland being a beautifully flawed City has responded by pretty much backing the club to its fullest since day one.
