About the speaker series: At this moment in our nation’s history, there is an unprecedented need for interreligious education and engagement around Islam. Much of the fear-mongering around Muslims is grounded in a deep mistrust of shariah, or Islamic religious law. This series will not only foster intelligent conversation around the specter of shariah in the American context, but also look at the myriad ways in which law and justice are refracted through the experiences of American Muslims today. This series is sponsored by WYPR (88.1 FM), Maryland Humanities, Howard County Muslim Council, and the ACLU of Maryland. About this lecture: Engy Abdelkader delivered "American Muslims Under Surveillance" on April 6, 2017, at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. In her talk, Abdelkader examined the U.S. government’s Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program, which targets American Muslims and calls on community leaders to identify individuals within their communities who show signs of radicalization. Abdelkader argued that the current CVE program (1) infringes on Muslim civil rights, (2) perpetuates an irrational fear of Muslim communities, and (3) wastes time and resources by focusing on a minority group while dismissing other viable non-Muslim national security threats. This lecture was second of three. http://icjs.org/programs/confronting-...
