Qui La Voce (In Sweetest Accents), sung by Anna Case. Recorded April 2, 1920 in New York, NY. From "I Puritani." The sleeve for Edison 83087 gives this information about the piece. "This air is a famous one, and resembles somewhat the mad music of "Lucia." Elvira, the heroine, at the moment she sings "Qui La Voce," supposes that her lover has deserted her on the eve on her bridal day, and so becomes insane. It occurs at the opening of the second act of "I Puritani" (The Puritans). The libretto was written by Count Pepoli, the music by the ever melodious Bellini. It was first presented in Paris at the Theatre Italien. For many years it had not been given in this country, until Hammerstein revived it in 1906. This was neglect, probably owing to the fact that the story of the opera is somewhat foolish, as well as dull, and only the delightful music of Bellini keeps it from oblivion. Anna Case gives the aria with every nuance of which she is capable, and, of course, surmounts its technical difficulties with ease and skill.
