#sonicthehedgehog 2 (Mega Drive) vs #supermarioworld (SNES) Speed vs Precision – The 16 Bit Showdown How many of us argued about this in the school playground…. In this video, we compare two of the most iconic platformers ever created: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the #segamegadrive and #supermarioworld on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). These games didn’t just define their consoles, they helped shape the entire future of video games. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 launched on the Sega Mega Drive in November 1992, released worldwide in a rare simultaneous launch Sega famously branded “Sonic 2sday.” Built to showcase the power of 16 bit hardware, Sonic 2 delivered larger levels, faster gameplay, vibrant colour palettes, and detailed parallax scrolling. The introduction of Miles “Tails” added cooperative and competitive play, while the game’s sense of speed set it apart from anything else at the time. Its soundtrack, composed by Masato Nakamura, used the Mega Drive’s sound hardware to deliver energetic, memorable tracks that perfectly matched Sonic’s momentum based gameplay. By 2006, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had sold around six million copies, becoming one of the best selling games on the system and a cornerstone of Sega’s console war strategy. Super Mario Bros Originally released on the NES in 1985, received a full 16 bit remake on SNES as part of Super Mario All Stars, which launched in 1993. This version preserved the original level design while enhancing the visuals with smoother animations, richer colours, parallax backgrounds, and updated sound effects and music. Mario’s gameplay focused on tight controls, careful timing, and precise platforming a stark contrast to Sonic’s speed driven design philosophy. Super Mario All Stars proved hugely successful, selling over 10 million copies worldwide, and helped introduce a new generation of players to Nintendo’s most famous hero. Graphically, both games represent the best of their respective styles. Sonic 2 emphasises motion, spectacle, and fast scrolling environments, while Mario delivers clarity, consistency, and timeless character design. Sound design also highlights their differences: Sonic’s pop influenced soundtrack leans into energy and rhythm, while Mario’s themes remain instantly recognisable, playful, and universally memorable. Beyond sales and gameplay, these titles launched multimedia giants. Mario became a television icon through animated series in the late 1980s and early 1990s, eventually leading to major film adaptations and one of the most successful animated movie franchises in modern gaming history. Sonic, meanwhile, starred in multiple animated cartoons throughout the 1990s and 2000s before achieving massive success in cinema with the live action Sonic the Hedgehog film series starting in 2020, which has since grossed over $1 billion worldwide and continues to expand with sequels and spin offs. Verdict I’m a self confessed, sega fan boy and would love to shout Sonic but (maybe) as I’m a bit older, I’ve found Mario to be a bit more of a challenge and more fun…What are your thoughts ???? 🕹️ Are you Team Sonic or Team Mario?
