Augusto Pinochet was released from a hospital Wednesday, one day after suffering a mild stroke. His spokesman, retired Gen. Guillermo Garin, said Pinochet was recovering from the latest in a series of mild strokes diagnosed by doctors in recent years. The 89-year-old former ruler was admitted Tuesday morning to the Santiago Military Hospital after fainting at home. His younger son, Marco Antonio Pinochet, said his father remained unconscious for about 30 minutes. Earlier on Wednesday, a friend who visited in hopsital the former dictator said his health was improving. A small group was gathered outside the hospital to show their support for Pinochet. Courts have twice blocked trial for Pinochet on charges related to human rights abuses during his 1973-90 dictatorship because of his health problems, which also include a mild case of dementia, diabetes and arthritis. A court hearing had been scheduled for Wednesday on whether Pinochet will be stripped of the immunity from prosecution he enjoys as former president to allow his trial in a rights case, but it was postponed because of his latest episode. Pinochet's opponents claim he and his associates have exaggerated his health problems to escape trial, noting that he is usually hospitalized when a court is about to rule on one of the many criminal cases he faces.
