If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction and seeking help, please call 757-566-7332 Williamsburg Place Lecture Series The Farley Center and The Pavilion host monthly professional workshops for area providers. These cutting edge presentations feature information on addiction, ethics, dual diagnosis, co-dependency, military and addiction, eating disorders, assessment, and process disorders. Workshops are held on the 4th Friday of each month from 9:00 am -11:00 am on the campus of Williamsburg Place. OVERVIEW Self-injury, specifically cutting, is an increasing phenomenon among the adolescent and young adult population. While the rates of self-injury are increasing, the behavior continues to be stigmatized, pathologized, and misunderstood by human service professionals. Thus, it is imperative that helping professionals gain a holistic understanding of working with clients who self-injure. This presentation will present knowledge, awareness, and skills related to self-injury through the presenter’s research and clinical experience on the topic. GOALS Participants will gain an increased understanding and awareness about self-injury. Participants will learn specific knowledge related to the demographics, characteristics, and motivations related to self-injury. Participants will learn different skills and interventions used to effectively work with this population. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Dr. Laurie Craigen is a graduate from the College of William and Mary with advanced degrees in counseling education and school psychology. She has dedicated the last 10 years in working with clients and self injury. She has published on self injury treatment in the Journal for the Education of the Gifted, Journal of Human Services, Journal of Humanistic Counseling Education and Development. She has been awarded grant funding on self injury treatment and currently is an assistant faculty member in the department of educational leadership and counseling, human services program at Old Dominion University. She is a licensed professional counselor and board certified practitioner for human services.
